Description

For this significant expansion project, Bignell Watkins Hasser Architects performed a comprehensive upgrade to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church narthex, introducing a range of new facilities and enhancements.

Key features of the building program include the addition of modern restroom facilities, new user amenities, a dedicated sprinkler room, new utility service areas, and increased daylighting. Notably, a grand stained-glass window was relocated to a prominent position at the forefront of the new narthex, preserving its historical significance while enhancing its visibility. A new sprinkler system was also installed for the expansion and extended throughout the existing church to ensure comprehensive fire safety.

The external design incorporates a wraparound terrace featuring a snow melt system, an accessible ramp, and strategically placed stairs to optimize pedestrian flow. Additionally, the scope of work involves selective demolition of existing interior partitions, floors, doors, and toilet rooms to facilitate updates to the vesting sacristy, usher’s closet, and altar servers’ space.

St. Patrick’s Catholic Church is situated in the northwest quadrant of the intersection of Norbeck Road and Muncaster Mill Road, at 4101 Norbeck Road, Rockville, Maryland.
