Description
Bignell Watkins Hasser Architecture & Interiors (Bigwaha) provided architectural and interior design services for the renovation of The Walrus Oyster & Ale House, newly completed at National Harbor. The transformation reflects the restaurant’s focus on high-quality seafood and an elevated yet whimsical dining experience within a modern, coastal-inspired setting.
Working closely with the owner and Maryland-based artisans Kelly L. Walker and McLain Wiesand, Bigwaha infused the space with custom artistry—including hand-painted murals inspired by Alice in Wonderland and the Chesapeake oyster industry, fish scale-like plaster walls, convex mirror features, and gabion partitions filled with reclaimed oyster shells.
Whimsical elements and colorful tilework are balanced with refined furnishings, lighting, and finishes to create a space full of charm and character. The patio was enhanced with a tidewater-style metal canopy and an indoor-outdoor bar with a garage-style shutter, extending seasonal use and visually connecting the interior and exterior.
