Description
Bignell Watkins Hasser Architects has been working with Howard County for several years on this project as the program has evolved. In 2019, a deal was made with the State to purchase the land for $1, allowing the County to pay for infrastructure to reduce future flood waters in Ellicott City.
The new design is a 15,000 sf. fire station focusing on reducing the size to make it more cost effective and energy efficient. The design allows for the station to be built initially with three apparatus bays with the ability to add a fourth bay in the future. A county police suite will be collocated within the facility.
Working with the County, our firm developed design standards in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and incorporated these standards into the station. A transition corridor has been added off the apparatus bay to allow for cleaning and disinfecting of personnel before entering the living areas. Emphasis is being placed on the treatment and movement of the air within the bunkrooms, which are gender-neutral. The facility achieved LEED Gold Certification.
